A welcome to new readers..
If you’ve come here via The Independent website - welcome. Please look around and comment where you see fit; you don’t have to register (though it’s a nice touch).
If you’re just browsing, the latest Network section published today is online. Read about:
Attack of the Killer Vacuum Cleaners - “Remember when robots were going to take over the world or, at the very least, bring you a cup of tea in bed?” - by me, and In The Beginning was Word - “When schools buy software, there seems to be only one choice: Microsoft. Why don’t more of them use Linux? It can do most of the work, it’s more secure and it’s free” - by Michael Pollitt.
In the meantime, if anyone has changed from using Apple systems to Windows (through choice, rather than “the company made me”) could you get in touch? network@independent.co.uk is the address.

Might it not be an idea to put that email address in the RH panel?

you don’t quite validate. http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://www.charlesarthur.com/blog fixing this would be nice. this also flag up the problem that you can’t decide whether to use UTF-8 or not :)
nonetheless, i’ve subscribed already!

just noticed you’ve got a W3C XHTML sign. you’ve got to make it validate now! and also just noticed you’re on wordpress. nice choice :)

Hi James- yes, good idea. But I can’t decide which of the three or four emails I have to use. Personal one? (It’s my blog, not an Independent enterprise.) One that comes to my work? My work one? Easiest for me to watch these comments, to be honest.
Bward - actually, it does validate according to the links on the site I’ve got.. I just tried them again; I was getting problems yesterday with pound signs and some pasting. But it should be OK.

okay, sorry :)
i’m sure i found some page that didn’t validate, but i can’t find it now. you do, though, have character encoding problems. hit the validate button on /blog/ and you get:
“Character Encoding mismatch!
The character encoding specified in the HTTP header (iso-8859-1) is different from the value in the element (utf-8). I will use the value from the HTTP header (iso-8859-1) for this validation.”
the problem is with your http headers, but you might not be able to change them; depends on your host.
sorry to sound narky :)

OK, bward, I’ve found the problem - as you rightly said, the header and encoding were different. Now agree. Thanks for the input.

You interviewed me for the Independent yesterday, as part of a story called “Scientists make case that there could be life on Red Planet”, but I failed to get your contact information. My name is Karl Mitchell and NOT Karl Miller. Please could you arrange for this to be corrected on your website and in any future stories. Thankyou, -Karl

Karl, I’m *really* sorry. I had your surname spelt correctly at the top of my notes and in my contacts listing and for no reason I can understand wrote “Miller” in the story. Of course I’ll tell our web people to correct it. Sorry, and I hope that won’t put you off next time I call, as you were terrifically helpful.
