Ooh that Jemima Kiss, don’t annoy her
Angry words from Jemima Kiss over at journalism.co.uk (see, you go to a site for one thing, hack back to the home URL, and then you start reading…) about the annoying emails she keeps receiving from a publication which insists it’ll stop sending them very soon.
Except it doesn’t.
So far, in fact, it’s been sending them - unwanted - for three years.
To add insult to injury, the publication involved ought to have its act together; it’s ITWeek.
Gotta agree with her conclusion though:
And the answer - of course - is to receive all your news and PR material by RSS. It’s like a breath of fresh air…
[Homer Simpson voice] Mmm… RSS..

You want to hear the really funny press list I can’t get off? The one where I’ve actually emailed directly with people who have promised to take my main address off the list, which I never asked to be on and that’s not the address I use for press lists anyway?
Yes, it’s the anti-spam FTC.

Ms Kiss’s years of attempts to get off of IT Week’s email list did not include any emails sent to me or to IT Week in the last five years, according to our records. The first I heard was a note from her demanding comment for her blog and - after all the years of frustration - giving me half a day to respond. I wrote to her directly and have yet to hear anything in reply. Nobody else seems to have had any problems unsubscribing although I would be happy to help anyone that has had difficulties.
And Arthur, does your closing remark mean you would like to be deleted from IT Week’s complimentary circulation list?

Sorry, meant to say Charles, not Arthur, above. Perhaps I should give up the day job.

Well, Lem, I dunno - are you still sending the complimentary copy to The Independent’s offices? Because I haven’t worked there since December 3.
But are there RSS feeds for IT Week? (Actually, I know there’s at least one - for IT Sneak..)

My reply to Lem today:
I’m afraid I didn’t know you’d replied until I saw this post - it was filtered into my junk folder.
I can assure you that I have attempted to unsubscribe and emailed IT Week on several occasions with no success. But thanks for removing me. Details aside, this is an example of how email often fails both publishers and readers and I’ll put it down to the medium, rather than your publication. Which is actually rather good of course.
And I’m not having any such problems with your RSS feed. ;~)
