Apple’s Tiger debuts April 29: was I close enough?

OK, so it’s official: Apple to Ship Mac OS X “Tiger” on April 29.

Back here I asked “late April do ya?” because everyone seemed to think that it was going to appear in mid-April, based on various hazy reports on some of the rumour sites.

Though (on looking back) my post seems to wander around quite where the release would happen, I’ll go with the title. Late April? I’d call the 29th “late”. Though of course the release is on time, coming in the first half of 2005.

So that’s 18 months or so since the last release. I’d expect it’ll be at least the same length of time before we see whatever the successor is called.

IFPI drafts ‘code of conduct’ for ISPs (and guess who it favours?)

My latest piece at The Register looks at how the record and movie industry have
drafted a new ‘code of conduct’ for ISPs and network operators in Europe
.

You may find this modest of them; after all, haven’t they got people to sue, copy-protection technologies to approve, and - from time to time - records or films to release?

Well, perhaps, but they sure are determined. If they had their way, ISPs would be storing all sorts of data about you just in case you break copyright; and if there was a complaint (not a court order) about you, your details would be handed over pronto. And you couldn’t run a server. Or connect to those tiresomely legal P2P services either.

Sometimes, these people are quite scary, I think. Oh, and they’ve also begun lawsuits against nearly 1,000 people in Europe and Asia for offering files on P2P networks.
