This will make *no* sense if you’re reading on RSS
OK, but if you’re reading the web page, and come here often(ish), you’ll see that after much twiddling, I’ve got a list of recent posts and recent comments on the front page.
Of course, the “recent comments” is a form of Russian roulette, given the delight that comment spammers take in trying to get stuff for p-k– etc into the more invisible parts of one’s blog; this shines a bright light on such stuff. Rather like those women who go to people’s houses and make sucked-lemon faces over their lack of housecleaning, the “recent comments” system (hacked about a bit from the MtDewVirus version, which didn’t want to work on 1.2 for me) is a way of exposing your mistakes in public.
But it seemed a nice thing to do. And I can always turn it off. Coming at some stage: dates on the ends of the recent posts and comments. Useful, ya think?
- These posts might be related (the database thinks..):
- If you're reading this from South America or Asia/Pacific, get in touch before I cut your access (23 November 2004; score: 33.61%)
- How much coffee can a bunch of hacks drink? A lot, if you're paying (10 September 2004; score: 31.56%)
- ..though equally, people think you've evil even when you're not (22 October 2006; score: 30.19%)

hey charles, the changes look good.
this should probably be on a different thread
re: the online card game thing, that i can just about understand. ie the site acts as third party between two / more human players.
However when you consider other online forms of luck based gambling, ie you vs the house, isn’t it a case of the ‘house always wins’* v.2( because we wrote the code!)
*although that probably means ‘always’ for a value of ‘the house gets more than the normal odds but not obvious enough to stop suckers coming back for more..’
wondering if this’ll get through the defcon comment spam filters
will

Not sure what you’re talking about, Will :-)
And no, you didn’t get through the filters - I had to approve your comment. Because it was nice..

sorry Charles it was a challenge to myself to try to make my comment non-specific enough to get through the filters, unfortunately this has resulted in an even less intelligible post than normal.
i think my point was inspired by your earlier piece on spammers.
i was wondering why people bother with ‘virtual’ versions of betting games (eg the spinning wheel game that begins with R) if it is just code that can be configured to produce any odds?

So can we have an RSS feed for the recent comments? Or is that asking just a little too much? :)

Yes, it is asking too much, unless you want to sponsor me to learn how to hack MySQL->RSS… Just take the comments feed - that’ll have the 10 most recent comments, which is the same as you get up there, actually.

If there’s one thing I do well, it’s jumping to conclusions without checking out the facts. I completely failed to notice that you already have an RSS comments feed link. Reading comments is one of the things I miss about using Safari RSS, to the extent that I’m considering abandoning RSS feeds altogether until someone finds a way round it. Sadly I’m not rich enough to sponsor such research.
