More things I found interesting.. 8 September 2005 (late)

  • Microsoft Monitor: Nano, Nano
I said the iPod could be a platform last December. Jupiter Research thinks so too. Read the whole article for some smart thinking. (Though the addition of automatic Outlook syncing to iTunes 5 is certainly the glimmerings of platform thinking…)
  • Cochlear implants’ performance not affected by amount of hearing loss in the implanted ear
Obviously, this makes a difference for us considering baby3’s future… Anyone care to chime in?
  • Incomplete tasks and the Zeigarnik Effect
The Zeigarnik effect states that people remember uncompleted or interrupted tasks better than completed ones.

Russian psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik first studied the phenomenon after noticing that waiters seemed to remember orders only so long as the order was in the process of being served.

He definitely had different waiters than me. But it does sort of make sense. Though I can’t remember the things I’m meant to do either. (Seen at 43 Folders)

  • Harnessing your interstitial time
My Grandmother always carried a bag with her latest knitting project in it. Whenever she found a few spare moments–no matter where she was–she could work in a few rows on a scarf or a sweater

Gee, Granny, another scarf. You shouldn’t have. (From 43 Folders, one of Fraser’s favourite sites. Does reading blogs count as wasting time? Not if you’re a journalist. :-) ) (Seen at 43 Folders)

  • Update on Memory Leaks
A week ago run-webkit-tests –leaks was reporting over 4000 leaks. Today, it usually reports less than five leaks. Many leaks that were found other ways have also been fixed.

David Hyatt, king of Apple’s Safari, on the progress that’s being made stemming memory leaks (which make your computer run slower and slow-er). The 4,000 leaks is why I don’t use Safari any more - I use Camino. (Seen at Surfin’ Safari)
